In today’s article, we will talk all about Intense Pulsed Light devices and how the treatment works.
What is IPL Photo Facial?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, aka photo facial, is a non-invasive way to improve the color and texture of the skin. It can undo some of the visible damage caused by sun exposure called photoaging, that are usually found on the face, neck, hands, or chest.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses short blasts of high-intensity light of more than one wavelength that penetrates just below the skin’s surface. It rejuvenates the skin by blending its natural colors and making it smoother, vibrant, and younger-looking by getting rid of the unwanted cells.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy can be used to treat all areas of the body, but the most common areas are those that receive the most sun exposure, typically the face, neck, and hands. The best candidates for this treatment are patients who have white untanned skin that is still somewhat elastic. Individuals who are tan or naturally have dark skin may not be suitable for this procedure.
How Does IPL Photo Facial Work?
To begin with, every laser treatment procedure is different from one another catering to each patient’s specific needs Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is different from a laser treatment. A laser focuses just one wavelength of light on the skin, while Intense Pulsed Light releases light of many different wavelengths, like a photo flash. The light from Intense Pulsed Light is more scattered and less focused than a laser. Pigment cells in your skin absorb the light energy, which is converted into heat. The heat destroys the unwanted pigment to clear up freckles and other spots. The skin will then appear smoother, and the blemishes are less noticeable.
In addition, the heat and light from the laser also encourage new, healthy skin cells to grow from beneath. Blood flow is drawn to the area by the heat of the laser and provokes an inflammatory response. This, in turn, results in the stimulation, development, and deposition of new dermal collagen and elastin, along with a reorganization of structural scaffold proteins and dermal connective tissue. This results in rejuvenation and thickening of the epidermis and an increase in dermal volume.
Post Intense Pulse Light Treatment Care
Use a sunblock
As in any light-based procedures, may it be Laser Skin Rejuvenation or Intense Pulsed Light Skin Rejuvenation, it is advisable to use sunblock, preferably SPF 30 or more, and one that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Avoiding the sun for the first few days after the treatment is also good.
Use a cold compress to minimize discomfort
Some swelling and redness are common after laser treatments. Cold compresses and ice packs can help to bring down swelling and minimize redness. They can also feel soothing to irritated skin.
Wait for makeup
The skin may appear “raw, red and rarely, swollen”. In such instances, wait for a day or two before applying makeup. Other than that, Intense Pulsed Light or Lasers are very down-to-earth and non-invasive procedures with minimum downtime. So, there shouldn’t be any problems if the procedure is done correctly.
Why is it Important to Choose the Right Doctor?
Choosing the right doctor is crucial because any light-based procedure, may it be Laser Skin Treatment or Intense Pulsed Light Skin Treatment, can be dangerous if administered incorrectly.
A good practitioner must be aware of the principles of a Laser or Intense Pulsed Light treatment and be able to discuss the following steps with you before administering the procedure:
