Facts About Lip Fillers
Plump lips with an accentuated border have often been associated with beauty and youth. If you have wished that your lips were plumper and smoother, opting for non-surgical lip fillers should be the way to go. Dermal fillers for lip augmentation are one of the most common aesthetic procedures performed by medical aesthetic specialists at certified aesthetic clinics.
At Global Aesthetics, we have a team of skilled LCP Certified medical aesthetic specialists and doctors led by Assoc Prof Dr. Morthy, a renowned LCP Certified Aesthetic Physician and Trainer who is an expert in the field of Aesthetic Medicine. In this article, we will talk about lip fillers, what are the common lip filler types that you can opt for, and some facts related to lip fillers. So, read on-
What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers are injectables, that are completely biodegradable, biocompatible, and 100% natural. They are used to plump and reshape the lips. The reason why people go for lip fillers is that as we age, we naturally lose collagen and fat. This leads to thinness and sagginess of the face, including the lips. Thus, injecting lips with lip fillers not only helps in replacing that lost collagen and fat and providing the patient with aesthetic, symmetric, and fuller lips but also helps to create a more youthful appearance. The hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are now commonly used and are the safest of all types, with the most lasting effects.
What are the materials used in fillers?
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid lip fillers are regarded widely as the most common lip filler. These lip fillers help to accomplish a natural, more voluminous look with satisfactory results. The Hyaluronic acid-based brands Juvederm, Restylane, and Teosyal are the most popular injectable lip fillers. They consist of highly viscous hyaluronic acid gel with high filling capability for lips; and they last for about 8 to 10 months.
Agarose - Algeness
Algeness made from purified agarose gel, is a new and absorbable lip filler indicated for the correction of soft tissues and lip. Algeness will eventually be metabolized by the body after 8 to 10 months.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite
Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is an injectable lip filler that contains uniform CaHA microspheres suspended in an aqueous carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier. It is considered a long-lasting, but non-permanent filler, and is highly biocompatible with lip tissue, typically used to add volume to their lips.
Polycaprolactone
The non‐Hyaluronic acid bioresorbable polycaprolactone (PCL)‐based filler with collagen‐stimulating properties has proven to be highly effective to fill in lines above the lips and add volume to the lips.
How is the procedure done?
Lip injections are majorly done using a compound called hyaluronic acid as mentioned earlier. This compound is also naturally produced by the human body and acts as a lubricant to all the muscles and joints so that one can move without any pain and discomfort. The lip filler procedure starts with a proper analysis of the lip shape and the desired result. The aesthetic practitioner then measures and draws the lips into compartments. A numbing agent or local anesthesia is injected into the lips to numb the lips before starting the filler procedure. The filler is then injected in small proportions and the lips are massaged while injecting. This is done to get the perfect shape and balance between all quadrants. After the procedure, the lips will look natural, contoured, and voluminous.
Injecting lips with biodegradable fillers by the skilled cosmetic injection specialist leads to the synthesis of collagen in the area that was injected. Collagen is the main material that is responsible for maintaining the overall skin elasticity and smoothness. Since the lip injection increases collagen production, the dermis or top layer of the lip is thickened. There is the prevention of wrinkling even after the hyaluronic acid itself is no longer actively working. Even after the initial effects of the lip filler wear off, there is no wrinkling or sagging of the lips that the patient needs to worry about. The lips will be fuller and smoother than they were before the procedure.
Unlike some cosmetic procedures which may take a few days before results can be seen, with the non-surgical lip fillers injection treatment, the patient can walk out of that clinic door with a beautiful pout as soon as the procedure is over. They will be able to get a really good idea of the finished look as soon as the whole procedure is over. With the advancement in technology, lip fillers are capable to last effectively up to eighteen to twenty months at a time. The exact length of time depends on how one’s body synthesizes the hyaluronic acid.
Lip Filler Placement
Enhancement of the white roll, which can be achieved by injecting along with the vermillion–cutaneous junction to prevent “lipstick bleeding” into the vertical rhytides of the lip.
Volume augmentation of the body of the lip, which is accomplished by injecting into the vermillion and mucosa with the intention of producing larger, more robust lips. The injection may be in selected areas or throughout the lips.
Correction of the vertical rhytides, which is achieved by injecting fillers perpendicularly to the long axis of the lip and parallel to the rhytides. These results can be further enhanced by the injection of a neuromodulator, such as botulinum toxin, to relax the dynamic action of the orbicularis oris muscle.
Elevation of the oral commissures, which is accomplished by placing filler in the most lateral aspect of the lower lip to provide support to the commissures. This effort can be supported by the placement of a neurotoxin in the depressor anguli oris muscles.
Enhancement of the philtrum columns of the upper lip, which is accomplished by superficial vertical injection of filler into each philtrum column. It is important to realize that the philtrum columns are not parallel to each other, but rather form an inverted “V” shape that narrows as it approaches the nostril sills and columella of the nose.
The patient might have swelling or tenderness and bruising after the procedure, though the side effects should be minor and will be over within 2 days. Aftercare for lip fillers is manageable.
(Source)What are the precautions you need to take?
-
Apply an ice pack to help ease swelling, bruising and pain.
-
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
-
Avoid extremely hot or cold drinks.
-
Avoid makeup on the lips for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
If the patient does not like the overall outcome of the procedure and does not want to wait for the fillers to naturally synthesize in the body, a counter injection can be injected on the lips. The doctor or aesthetic practitioner can inject hyaluronidase, an enzyme that can significantly increase the overall process of absorption. Lips will be back to their original state at a much quicker time.
After the procedure, the lips will feel exactly like they always do, except just a little fuller. They will be as mobile, elastic, and soft as they were before the procedure.
Why is it important to choose the right doctor?
