About Post Dermal Filler Care

The four major structural components of our face are skin, fat, muscle, and bone. As we age, volume loss in these structures contributes to many of the visible signs of aging. Dermal fillers may help.

Over time, age-related bone loss in the face can lead to retraction of the jawline, descent of the nose, and loss of high cheekbones. The facial muscles also decrease in volume and elasticity, and deflation and movement of facial fat further accentuate the signs of aging. Finally, the skin stretches and loses elasticity — compounded by the loss of scaffolding provided by fat, muscle, and bone, this leads to wrinkles, sagging skin, and other familiar signs of aging.

About dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances made of Hyaluronic acid, Calcium hydroxylapatite, Agarose, or Polycaprolactone that are injected under the skin. They can address a number of common concerns including smoothing of deep under-eye circles, lifting of cheekbones, volumization of the lips, smoothing of lip lines, and nasolabilal folds (the creases that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth), and rejuvenation of the hands.

Do's and don'ts related to fillers

  • Assess & plan: Different conditions require a different approach. The cosmetic specialist will have to assess the treatment area and decide the treatment plan. For example, the doctor will have to select between using a needle or cannula, the type of pain management, the technique of injection, depth, and volume.
  • Anti-Bruising Medication: Clients who are prone to bruising or those who are on blood thinners may want to consider taking some medications to minimize the chances of bruising such as Arnica
  • Medical history: Do tell the cosmetic injection specialist about any medications you take regularly just in case there is any potential reaction.
  • Rest: It is best not to strain yourself or have excessive facial movements so that the Dermal Filler does not displace from the site of injection.
  • No makeup: Avoid makeup on the treatment area for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Avoid Blood Thinners: Tell your doctor if you're on any kind of a blood thinner. Your doctor may want to consider stopping your blood thinners for a day or two.
  • Alcohol & smoking: You can drink alcohol, but not in excess since alcohol can increase the bleeding time and you may have some bruises. The same applies to smoking.

Why is it important to choose the right doctor?

Choosing the right doctor is crucial because injecting dermal fillers can be dangerous if administered incorrectly. Your doctor should-

Be aware of the principles of procedure

Your aesthetic practitioner must know the principles of dermal filler procedure, the type of dermal fillers that will work best for you, injection technique, and be through with the selection of needle or cannula.

Have knowledge about the patient and procedure

A good practitioner must discuss the following steps with you before administering the procedure:

  • The type of dermal filler that is suitable for you and why did the doctor choose that.

  • The type of pain management

  • Duration of action or longevity of the procedure

  • What are the possible complications and how to treat them if it occurs?

  • What to expect after the dermal filler procedure?

  • And the obvious do's and don'ts after a dermal filler procedure
