In a recent article, we spoke about the major differences between Q-Switch Lasers and Pico Lasers. (Read the blog here- Q- Switch Lasers Vs Pico Lasers)

In today’s article, we will help to educate you further about pico lasers and how it works.

About Pico Laser Technology

A picosecond is a unit of time – which is a trillionth of a second. The speed of the energy-charged light beams emitted by the Picosecond lasers is faster than any other lasers technology by almost 10 times – after the term Picoseconds. The laser light pulses are extremely quick and are very effective at shattering unwanted pigmentation into smaller particles. With the advancement in today's science and technology, the pico or picosecond laser can be considered as a revolutionary laser technology due to its much-shortened pulse duration. There are few pico lasers with wavelength such as Ruby (694 nm), Alexandrite (755nm), and NdYAG at 1064 nm.

The picosecond laser is a novel dermatological laser technology that is useful in treating various cutaneous benign pigmentary disorders (BPDs), including freckles, solar lentigines, melasma, Hori macule, nevus of Ota, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and tattoo removal.

How Pico Lasers Work

Pico lasers operate by delivering laser pulses to the area of interest on the skin. However, Pico lasers tend to deliver these pulses within picoseconds which is approximately a hundred times faster as compared to other laser technologies. As a result, it gives out more laser pulses in a small period. Hence, pico lasers give a faster outcome almost two times quicker than the traditional lasers when applied to stubborn skin pigmentations.

In addition, when a Pico laser is used, stress lock-in happens and the major reaction involves the photoacoustic destruction of the particle, with a minor photothermal component which results in a more efficient and effective outcome with fewer complications.

Various Benefits of Pico Lasers

Some of the core benefits of Pico lasers include-

  • Pico laser treatments are highly targeted, which means any risk of skin damage is contained and minimized. As a result, Pico laser is extremely safe and can be applied to any area of the face and body.

  • Pico laser treatments are generally super-fast and desired results can be achieved in fewer sessions.

  • Pico laser treatment has zero downtime with very few side effects. A patient generally experiences slight, temporary discomfort like redness and swelling, that subsides within a few hours.
