Midface Augmentation Procedures
Many patients have a depressed mid-face structure, making the mouth look more protruded. In most cases, Asian patients have mid-face depression which appears in deep nasolabial folds or laugh lines and also giving awkward results after rhinoplasty. When the nose is augmented and the sides of the alar base areas are sunken, it can provide an unnatural appearance. Midface augmentation in Malaysia uses small implants to insert on the sides of each alar base to bring out the depressed mid-face, accentuating your nose, and also the facial balance. Paranasal augmentation or midface augmentation surgery is the preferred technique to give volume to central midface concavity (flat or hollow-looking midface). This is a nearly common facial feature in East Asian populations. Here you will learn the facts about midface augmentation and the procedures of how to do nose, lip, and face augmentation or rather Total Makeover Training courses using fillers or threads.
Why is midface augmentation popular?
By the nature of its centrality, the midface plays a significant role in defining the overall appearance and impression of a face. Therefore, midface concavity can be extremely aesthetically displeasing as it gives a gaunt, old, and haggard look due to the sunken areas around the nose. It can also cause the mouth to stick out from the face. As a result, there are a large number of patients who wish to improve midface concavity. This procedure will not just proffer more volume to the midface but will also make the protruding mouth seem less protrusive!
Three different procedures of midface augmentation surgery
To achieve a voluminous midface and fuller cheeks, three different procedures will be done, depending on each patient’s health status-
1. Autologous cartilage graft
This surgery is performed under a general aesthetician and often takes 45-60 minutes to complete. The cartilage is harvested through a 5–7cm transverse incision over the preferred donor area such as ribs or ears. The harvested cartilage will then be carved into the required shape and size. The surgeon will make an incision inside the mouth and carefully place the harvested cartilage into the sunken area around the nose to make the midface more voluminous. After the procedure is performed, the incision will be sutured with threads.
2. Autologous fat graft
This surgery is performed under a general aesthetician and often takes 30-45 minutes to complete. People who are required to add a small amount of volume to fill the paranasal area can determine the fat graft process. Fat tissues are harvested from the buttocks, thigh, or abdomen using a thin tube called a cannula with the harvested fat placed into a centrifuge to extract impurities. The purified fat tissues which are very rich in stem cells will gradually be injected into the sunken areas to give the face a fuller and younger look.
3. Implants
This surgery is performed under a general aesthetician and often takes 30-60 minutes to complete. Midfacial implants are used to add fullness to the cheeks and maybe injected through incisions made inside the mouth or below the lower eyelid. When applied accurately, cheek implants can provide the patient with higher cheekbones or fuller cheeks, with the least scarring afterwards. The synthetic implants such as Silicone, Medphore, or Gore-tex, will be sculptured carefully to suit the facial construction of each patient before being inserted. There are two different elements used for midface augmentation- silicone implant and rib cartilage. The midface augmentation is usually combined with the rhinoplasty but it can be individually performed without rhinoplasty as well.
