About Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner

Often people think, a nurse to be someone always rushing through swinging doors while pushing a gurney, or moving in a busy ICU, between patient rooms. However, that’s not a nurse’s job description at all. In fact, there are numerous specialist nurses and advanced practice nurses (APRNs) who serve patients' specific needs, especially enhancing the appearance of people. Working as a nurse practitioner in the Aesthetic industry is a fairly great experience. The clinics usually retain general working hours keeping you entirely free for weekends, holidays, and evenings-a rarity in the medical profession.

Aesthetic nurse practitioners either work independently in an aesthetic clinic or alongside a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or other aesthetic specialists. These nurses are working actively with their patients to offer them the look they want — whether that implies applying Botox for an even more young face or extracting an old tattoo. Nurse practitioners can come across a number of paths to aesthetics. Although some nurses may realize that they want to go into aesthetics after completion of their degree, many find their way into the profession after being worn down by nursing stress in more high-stakes environments like emergency care. In addition, it is rare for a dermatological emergency to arise which means on-call duties are pretty much nil. Aesthetic nursing provides highly skilled NPs the opportunity to spend more time with patients, practice their own creativity, and build a career that is sustainable and satisfying.

At Aesthetic Academy Asia, we specialize in training nurses to excel in Advanced Aesthetics. They will be trained in assessing the aesthetic condition, prescribing the right procedures, prepare the patient for procedures, applying anesthetic creams, and other preparatory steps. They will also be trained in mixing and diluting the toxins, marking the injecting spots, and administering toxins. They will also consult and advise the patients on post-care.

Roles of an Aesthetic Nurse

For an aesthetic nurse practitioner, the professional/clinical environment is very different from that of several other specialties. An aesthetic nurse practitioner will never operate in a hospital. Rather, this nurse practitioner practice appears to include nurses operating in what is referred to as "medical spas." Many of these private practice facilities are fitted with plastic surgery operating rooms, while others are solely for surgical aesthetic treatments such as injectable fillers or laser treatments. Aesthetic NPs should expect to work together with aesthetic specialists, like plastic surgeons or dermatologists. The clinical environment of the medical spa is very distinct from the rapid, stressful pace of so many hospitals. Even as aesthetic nurse practitioners always have proper schedules, most days they will exactly know which patients they will see for which practices and will have little in the way of surprises or emergency situations. During the Professional Certificate in Advanced Aesthetic program, we will train the nurses in handling emergency situations such as anaphylaxis, vasovagal attacks, and other aesthetic emergency conditions. We also train them in handling filler-related complications, such as necrosis and other serious aesthetic complications.

Aesthetic Nurses and their patients?

There will be a certain patient population who would equate popular culture with surgical procedures, but the fact is there is an extremely diversified population of patients opting for cosmetic treatments. Although nurse practitioners who are trained in aesthetics definitely handle their good proportion of middle-aged men and women who would like to look younger, they can also treat people from almost every aspect of life based on the procedures through which they develop their skills. The types of patients being treated by an aesthetic nurse practitioner will primarily rely on the clinic where he or she practices, as certain clinics can concentrate exclusively on one or two forms of treatment that attract a particular type of patient. For example, aesthetic nurses may use laser therapies to support teenagers with acne or to serve as rehabilitation nurses for patients with cosmetic surgery who have been seriously injured or deformed. Nevertheless, nurses who find jobs in a skincare clinic that primarily focuses on Botox will most likely meet older patients whose biggest issue is to preserve a youthful look. In our program, we will train nurses on different skin classification, skin types, analysis, and consultation, importantly we will train them on prescribing the right procedures to address their aesthetic concerns.

Can Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner start their own practice?

An Aesthetic nurse practitioner’s everyday responsibility can depend on a large portion of where they operate. For example, nurse practitioners may consider themselves in charge of virtually every aspect of the practice in a medical spa environment. In fact, some aesthetic nurse practitioners are sometimes allowed to have their own facilities, based on where they practice the state rules. Regular activities will include anything from scheduling appointments to initial examinations to aesthetic procedures themselves for nurse practitioners with this level of responsibility.

Aesthetic nurses working in a doctor's office (especially plastic surgery centers) may have various daily responsibilities than those working in a medical spa. In the case of more complex procedures, nurse practitioners may find themselves, focusing on their own experience, supporting patients who are healing, or even aiding during aesthetic procedures or surgery.

What are the procedures an Aesthetic Nurse can do?

The types of clinical procedures an aesthetic nurse practitioner undertakes, along with everyday duties, depends upon the type of workplace where the nurse works. Below are some of the typical aesthetic procedures that nurse practitioners would consider when selecting this specific specialty to perform on a regular basis:

  • Botox / Dysport / Xeomin injectable

  • Hyaluronic Acid treatments

  • Skin boosters

  • Laser skin treatment procedures

  • Chemical peel

  • Microdermabrasion

  • Derma pen

  • Derma roller

  • Infrared, Radiofrequency and HIFU for skin tightening

However, it is important to know if your local health authorities allow you to practice or perform aesthetic procedures. Please check with your local health council before administering any aesthetic procedures.
