About fat injection
Full and well-defined lips tend to represent beauty and attractiveness. Gravity, maxillomandibular bone resorption, teeth, soft tissue loss, sun exposure, and smoking all contribute to signs of aging on the lip. Lips tended to shorten in length and widen with age and loss of collagen resulting in a thinner and longer appearance.
Fat transfer, which is also known as fat grafting, fat injections, and lipo-filling is a cosmetic procedure that is conducted using the patients' own fat to fill in irregularities and grooves on a different area of the body including the lips. The fat is collected from areas such as the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs, purified, and then injected without incisions which naturally enhances the volume of the lips.
About fat injection procedure
Lip augmentation with fat transfer is a two-step procedure that includes liposuction followed by injections. During fat transfer to the lips, fat is harvested from the abdomen (around the belly button), purified, and transferred into the lips for permanent lip augmentation.
The fat is taken with the help of a large needle and syringe- washed over meshed gauze, filled into the syringe, and injected into the lip tissue. Multiple passes with a small needle deposit the strained fat in horizontal tunnels within the lips. The area injected should be massaged gently so that the fat is evenly distributed and is well surrounded by healthy tissues. This ensures that the transplanted fat remains in contact with the surrounding tissues that must supply it with oxygen and nutrients.
Subsequent injections are given at a minimum of 3 months. The subsequent treatment sessions should be tailored to the individual patient’s overall treatment goals.
Lip augmentation procedures should be performed only by certified aesthetic practitioners who are trained individuals skilled to perform procedures with adequate knowledge about the treatment to achieve a beautiful augmented lip contour that makes the overall face look young and rejuvenated.

Lip Size: Autologous fat is useful to increase lip volume and plumpness through strategic injections.

Lip Shape: Similarly to adjustments to lip size, autologous fat can enhance the symmetry and contour of the upper lip and/or lower lip.
Average recovery time from fat injection procedure
The total recovery time from a lip augmentation involving fat grafting includes healing from both the injection site and the areas from where the fat was harvested. The exact healing time will vary depending on the extent of the liposuction procedure and the patient's medical history. Mild bruising and swelling can be expected to last for around 7-10 days.
Potential side effects of the fat injection procedure
Administration of fat injections for lip enhancements should be performed by a trained doctor with a sound understanding of physiology and adipose tissue anatomy. The procedure often has mild side effects like pain, bruising, numbness and tenderness or redness and swelling, but sometimes complications may also lead to induration or depression at the site of injection, dysphagia, nerve injury causing temporary numbness, or in some rare cases, even prolonged edema, fat necrosis, and fat calcification.
