HAND REJUVENATION WITH DERMAL FILLERS

Hand Rejuvenation With Dermal Fillers

In a recent article, we talked about how to correct nasolabial folds & marionette lines using Dermal Filler. (Read the blog here- Nasolabial Fold & Marionette Lines Using Dermal Filler).

In today’s article, we will help in educating you further on getting younger rejuvenated looking hands with the help of Dermal Filler treatments.

Treatment of the aging hand with Dermal Fillers

As we age, our hands undergo some visual changes—oftentimes long before other parts of the body do. As with exposed skin elsewhere on the body, the skin on the hands is susceptible to sun damage, which can lead to sunspots and fine wrinkles, change skin’s texture, and cause actinic keratosis—a precancerous patch of scaly skin that forms on sun-damaged skin. In addition, as we age, hands start to lose volume, which can make veins, tendons, and bones more prominent and result in an almost “skeletal” appearance.

Apart from the face and neck, the hand is the most visible unclothed area of the body. While the face is most often the focus of cosmetic treatments, aging skin on the back of the hands can also be improved with the advancement of science and technology.

Rejuvenating hands with the help of Dermal Filler is increasing in popularity as more people realize that hand cream alone will not combat the aging process. It is a non-invasive treatment that has no downtime and the effects may even last up to around 14 months.

Dermal Filler for hand rejuvenation

The Dermal Filler generally used for hand rejuvenation is Radiesse. This Dermal Filler treatment adds volume and improves the texture of the hands with the added benefit of being a collagen stimulator that stimulates the production of new collagen (a process called neocollagenesis).

Radiesse is a biodegradable filler made of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) gel microspheres that work immediately upon injection. CaHA is made up of ions of phosphate and calcium, which occur naturally in the human body. The CaHA microspheres are suspended in a 70% aqueous Carboxymethylcellulose gel.

The injectable gel initially does all the work of filling in the desired volume. As time goes on, though, the CaHA stimulates the naturally-occurring collagen, allowing the skin to produce more of its own filler. The hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon in the gel help to create a structure that mimics connective tissue.

Eventually, the CaHA is absorbed back into the body, leaving the collagen in its place. Because of the science behind Radiesse, treatments give long-lasting results.

A local anesthetic is mixed into the Dermal Filler to reduce the likelihood of any discomfort during the treatment.

Dermal Fillers for hand rejuvenation procedure

Dermal Filler for hands rejuvenation procedure should be performed under certified aesthetic practitioners who are trained individuals skilled to perform procedures with adequate knowledge about this treatment procedure and has sound knowledge of hand anatomy. This is crucial because when injected into the wrong plane, these fillers can cause allergic reactions and infections. Other risks of improper injection technique are swelling and lumpiness, and even serious side effects such as the death of skin cells, and nerve damage.

The Dermal Fillers are injected into the deep lamina towards the veins, above the metacarpal plane, using a 25- to 32-gauge needle or a blunt cannula. The use of blunt cannulae, instead of sharp needles, minimizes the risk of damage to nerves and blood vessels.

Dermal Fillers can cause swelling of the dorsum of the hands for several days. To ensure proper distribution of the filler as well as to avoid any bumps and irregularities, the area of treatment is then gently massaged. The results from this treatment usually last up to 12-15 months, during which scheduled follow-up sessions are advised to assess the clinical result.

Patients are also advised to continue applying sunscreen on the backs of their hands every day post-procedure to prevent aging and developing harmful sunspots.
