Benefits of microdermabrasion cosmetic procedure

In a recent article, we elaborated upon microdermabrasion & dermabrasion for post-acne scar treatments (Read our article on post-acne scar treatment).

In today’s article, we will help educate you further about microdermabrasion cosmetic procedures and their various benefits.

About microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion, also known as “power peel”, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure in which the aesthetic practitioner exfoliates the skin, reducing various signs of aging and skin blemishes, making the skin appear more rejuvenated and even.

Rather than a high-speed brush, microdermabrasion uses aluminium oxide crystals or salt crystals that are passed with the help of a vacuum tube to exfoliate the overall surface skin and treat superficial skin problems like fine lines, dull skin, brown spots, mild acne scars, age spots, and sun-damaged layers of skin. Since just the very superficial cells of the skin are removed, no additional wound is created. As a result, there is no bleeding and the whole procedure has minimal or almost no downtime.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Microdermabrasion is an in-office procedure that usually takes about an hour. To begin with, the Aesthetic practitioner will use a handheld device to gently spray the particles on the outer layer of skin in the targeted areas. When the tip of the handpiece is placed on the skin's surface, and the system is activated, the handpiece gently pulls the skin in. The power line projects the aluminium oxide or salt crystals onto the skin surface through one opening. These abrade the skin surface, and the tubings of the suction system collect the used crystals along with the epidermal debris and grime through another opening housed in the tip of the same handpiece, thus establishing a close circuit loop of continuous flow and collection simultaneously. Patients are also advised to continue applying doctor-recommended sunscreen and moisturiser to the treatment area every day post-procedure to prevent aging and developing harmful sunspots and skin blemishes.

Scheduled follow-up sessions are advised to assess the clinical result based on the requirements of individual patients.

Who should get microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is considered a safe procedure for most skin types and colors. People might choose to get the procedure if they have the following skin concerns:

  • fine lines and wrinkles

  • hyperpigmentation, age spots, and brown spots

  • enlarged pores and blackheads

  • acne and acne scars

  • stretch marks

  • dull-looking skin complexion

  • uneven skin tone and texture

  • melasma

  • sun damage

Advantages of microdermabrasion

Some of the benefits of microdermabrasion are as follows-

Virtually painless

Since microdermabrasion is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that gently exfoliates the surface, removing just the top layer of the skin, it is often considered less painful than other invasive treatment procedures.

Safe and effective for all skin types

Microdermabrasion only removes dead or dying skin and not the deeper layers of the skin that are still viable (alive).

Minimal downtime

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that targets only the skin's surface layers. It can cover a much larger area at once, meaning a much faster treatment time and minimal downtime.

Improves collagen production

Regular microdermabrasion treatments may even yield mild collagen growth over time. A boost in collagen can help to minimise the overall appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

Potential side effects of microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion should be performed by a trained doctor with a sound understanding of physiology and human skin anatomy. Like any cosmetic procedure, microdermabrasion also has mild side effects like pain, bruising, numbness, and tenderness or redness and swelling. However, mistakes in the procedure may also lead to severe scarring and infection, itching, bleeding, enlarged pores, and various allergic reactions.
